Surviving Mud Season: Tips for Protecting Your Home and Enjoying the Season

Mud season. Vermonters know it well. As the snow melts and spring rains roll in, the Green Mountain State transforms into a patchwork of puddles, muck, and character. While it might not be Vermont’s most glamorous time of year, mud season is a sure sign that warmer days are ahead. With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can protect your home (and your sanity) while even learning to enjoy this transitional season.

Your front entryway tends to take the brunt of the mess during mud season. To keep things manageable, make sure to set up a strong defense. A tough, absorbent doormat outside and a thick rug or mat just inside the door will go a long way in catching the grime. A designated spot for muddy boots and shoes, along with a few hooks or baskets for jackets and bags, can help contain the chaos. It’s also a smart idea to keep a stack of old towels nearby to quickly wipe down wet paws or muddy footprints before they make their way through the rest of the house.

Outside, mud season can wreak havoc on gravel driveways and dirt paths. Ruts, puddles, and standing water are all too common. Regular maintenance like raking out uneven areas and adding a layer of gravel where necessary can help improve drainage and reduce damage. If your property has ditches or drainage systems, make sure they’re clear of debris so that water can flow freely away from your home.

Inside, your floors need extra protection. If you don’t already have a no-shoes rule, now’s the perfect time to implement one. Mud, grit, and road salt can scratch wood floors and stain rugs. Area rugs and runners in high-traffic spots can help protect your flooring and are easy to shake out or throw in the wash. If you have pets, be sure to wipe their paws before they come in—they're often the biggest culprits when it comes to tracking in mess.

Mud season is also the right time to give your foundation and basement a quick inspection. As snow melts and spring rains pick up, the ground becomes saturated, and water infiltration can sneak up fast. Look for any cracks in your foundation or damp spots in your basement. Test your sump pump if you have one, and make sure your gutters and downspouts are working properly to carry water away from the foundation. Preventative steps now can save you from costly repairs down the road.

Believe it or not, there’s beauty in this season too. Mud season offers the first hints of spring—longer days, brighter mornings, and the unmistakable scent of thawing earth. Take a walk in your rubber boots and embrace the squish underfoot. Visit a local sugarhouse and indulge in some fresh maple syrup. Start planning your garden or plant seeds indoors for a head start on summer. There’s something deeply satisfying about seeing the first green shoots emerge after a long winter.

And if you’re thinking about selling your home, don’t let mud season hold you back. Buyers are still active, and getting ahead of the spring market can give you a competitive edge. Keeping entryways clean, adding welcoming touches like a warm candle or freshly baked cookies, and highlighting cozy features like fireplaces or energy-efficient upgrades can make your home shine—even if there’s a little mud outside.

Mud season might not be the most glamorous time of year, but it’s a part of what makes living in Vermont so unique. With a little care, your home will stay clean, protected, and ready for the beautiful seasons ahead. And when you’re ready to make a move—no matter the weather—Geri Reilly Real Estate is here to help.
