Celebrating Earth Day: Making Your Home Greener and More Energy Efficient

As Earth Day approaches, it's a perfect time to reflect on our impact on the planet and consider ways we can make a positive difference. At Geri Reilly Real Estate, we believe that small changes at home can add up to significant environmental benefits. That's why we're passionate about helping homeowners make their homes greener and more energy-efficient. In this blog post, we'll explore some practical tips for creating an eco-friendly home that not only reduces your carbon footprint but also saves you money in the long run.

  1. Energy-Efficient Appliances: One of the easiest ways to make your home more energy-efficient is by upgrading to energy-efficient appliances. Look for appliances with the ENERGY STAR label, which indicates that they meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These appliances use less energy, which not only reduces your utility bills but also decreases your home's overall carbon emissions.
  2. Smart Thermostat Installation: Installing a smart thermostat is another simple yet effective way to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint. These thermostats can learn your heating and cooling preferences and adjust the temperature accordingly, optimizing energy usage. Additionally, you can control them remotely via a smartphone app, allowing you to adjust your home's temperature even when you're away, further saving energy and money.
  3. LED Lighting: Switching to LED lighting is a small change that can make a big difference. LED bulbs use significantly less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last much longer, reducing both energy consumption and the frequency of bulb replacements. Plus, LED bulbs come in a variety of colors and designs, allowing you to customize your home's lighting while still being eco-friendly.
  4. Proper Insulation and Sealing: Proper insulation and sealing are essential for maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature and reducing energy waste. Inspect your home for any gaps or leaks around windows, doors, and vents, and seal them as needed. Additionally, consider adding insulation to your walls, floors, and attic to prevent heat loss in the winter and keep cool air in during the summer.
  5. Renewable Energy Sources: If you're looking to take your commitment to sustainability to the next level, consider investing in renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines. While the initial cost may be higher, these systems can significantly reduce or even eliminate your reliance on traditional energy sources, lowering your carbon footprint and potentially saving you money on energy bills in the long term.
  6. Reduce Water Usage:  You can reduce the amount of water usage in your home by shortening shower times, fixing any leaky faucets or pipes, and using the cold-water cycle for laundry.   If you’re ready to make updates on fixtures you can purchase low-flow, high efficiency toilets, showerheads, and faucets which can help you save on water bills as well!
  7. Reuse: To put it simply, reusing = reducing!  There are numerous household items we can either swap or get creative with to increase our reuse.  Swap plastic shopping bags for reusable ones, find some fun kitchen towels to replace paper towels, cut back on plastic water bottles and find one you can use over and over! Ready to reuse all those glass food jars?  Use the jars as drinking glasses, vases, containers to organize office supplies, or to hold dry goods!
  8. Recycle: One person’s trash is another person’s treasure!  This year, while cleaning out your home and closets make a pile to donate or sell!  Clothes can be brought to Goodwill instead of thrown in the trash. You can find your unwanted furniture a great new home by posting the items on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Challenge yourself by searching for items you want to add to your home on these sites as well!

As we celebrate Earth Day, let's remember that every action we take, no matter how small, has the potential to make a difference. By implementing these tips to make your home greener and more energy-efficient, you'll not only reduce your environmental impact but also create a more comfortable and cost-effective living space for yourself and your family. Together, we can work towards a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Happy Earth Day from Geri Reilly Real Estate!

  • 1/2 cup pecans, roughly chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Prep Brussels Sprouts: Trim the ends of the Brussels sprouts and cut them in half. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add Cranberries and Pecans: Toss fresh cranberries and chopped pecans into the bowl with the Brussels sprouts. The combination of tart cranberries and nutty pecans adds a burst of flavor and texture.
  4. Whisk the Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, maple syrup, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. This flavorful dressing will enhance the natural sweetness of the Brussels sprouts.
  5. Coat and Toss: Drizzle the dressing over the Brussels sprouts, cranberries, and pecans. Toss everything together until well coated, ensuring each piece is infused with the delicious maple-balsamic flavor.
  6. Spread on Baking Sheet: Spread the coated Brussels sprouts mixture evenly on the prepared baking sheet, arranging them in a single layer. This ensures that they roast evenly and develop a beautiful caramelization.

Herb-Roasted Turkey with Cranberry-Orange Glaze

Ingredients:

Turkey:

  • 1 whole turkey (12-14 pounds), thawed if frozen
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons fresh sage, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons fresh rosemary, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons fresh thyme, finely chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 onion, quartered
  • 1 lemon, halved
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled

Cranberry-Orange Glaze:

  • 1 cup cranberry sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • Zest of one orange

Gravy:

  • Pan drippings from the roasted turkey
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups turkey or chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Remove the giblets from the turkey cavity, rinse the turkey inside and out, and pat it dry with paper towels.
  2. Herb Butter Rub: In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, chopped sage, rosemary, and thyme. Season the mixture with salt and pepper.
  3. Prepare the Turkey: Gently lift the skin of the turkey and rub half of the herb butter mixture directly onto the turkey breast. Rub the remaining mixture over the entire surface of the turkey. Sprinkle additional salt and pepper over the exterior.
  4. Stuff and Truss: Place quartered onion, lemon halves, and garlic cloves inside the turkey cavity. Truss the turkey using kitchen twine to secure the legs and keep the shape.
  5. Cranberry-Orange Glaze: In a small saucepan, combine cranberry sauce, orange juice, honey, Dijon mustard, and orange zest. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes until it thickens slightly. Set aside.
  6. Roast the Turkey: Place the prepared turkey on a rack in a roasting pan. Roast in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the turkey.
  7. Glaze the Turkey: During the last 30 minutes of roasting, baste the turkey with the cranberry-orange glaze every 10 minutes, creating a flavorful, glossy finish.
  8. Rest and Carve: Once the turkey is cooked, let it rest for at least 20 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring a moist and flavorful bird.
  9. Make Gravy: While the turkey rests, pour the pan drippings into a saucepan. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and a cup of broth until smooth. Gradually whisk the flour mixture into the pan drippings, adding the remaining broth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  10. Serve and Enjoy: Carve the turkey, drizzle with additional cranberry-orange glaze if desired, and serve with the savory herb-infused gravy.

This Herb-Roasted Turkey with Cranberry-Orange Glaze is a show-stopping centerpiece for your Thanksgiving feast, combining the classic flavors of herbs, citrus, and cranberries to create a memorable and delicious entree.

Preparing Your Vermont Home for Winter: Essential Maintenance Tips

As the vibrant colors of autumn fade into the crisp chill of winter, Vermonters know it's time to prepare their homes for the inevitable challenges that the cold season brings. With its picturesque landscapes and picturesque winters, Vermont's beauty often comes with a price—harsh weather conditions that can take a toll on even the most well-constructed homes. To ensure your abode remains warm, cozy, and in top shape throughout the winter months, it's crucial to undertake some essential maintenance tasks. Here, we'll discuss a comprehensive guide to prepping your Vermont home for the upcoming winter, equipping you with the knowledge you need to protect your haven from the elements.

Weatherproofing Your Home:

One of the most critical aspects of preparing your Vermont home for the winter season is weatherproofing. The bitter cold and heavy snowfalls can easily find their way through any vulnerable points in your home's exterior, leading to chilly drafts and potential damage. Start by inspecting your windows and doors for any gaps, cracks, or air leaks. Consider applying weatherstripping and caulking to seal off any openings, preventing heat loss and keeping your energy bills in check. Additionally, ensure that your attic and basement are adequately insulated to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

HVAC System Check:

Your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system should be in top-notch condition before the winter sets in. Schedule a professional inspection to assess the functionality of your furnace, thermostat, and any other heating components. Clean or replace your furnace filters to improve efficiency and indoor air quality. If you use a fireplace or wood-burning stove, have the chimney cleaned and inspected to prevent potential fire hazards. Proper maintenance of your HVAC system not only keeps you warm but also ensures safety for you and your family during the colder months.

Roof and Gutters Maintenance:

Vermont winters often bring heavy snowfall, which can add significant weight to your roof. Inspect your roof for any signs of damage, such as missing or cracked shingles, and address them promptly. Clear your gutters and downspouts of any debris to prevent ice dams, which can lead to water damage and leaks. Consider installing heating cables along the edges of your roof to prevent the formation of ice dams, ensuring that melting snow and ice can properly drain off your roof.

Outdoor Preparations:

Protecting your outdoor elements is equally important. Store any outdoor furniture, garden tools, and hoses in a sheltered area to prevent damage from freezing temperatures and snow. Trim any overhanging tree branches that could potentially break under the weight of heavy snow, posing a threat to your home. Remember to stock up on winter supplies, such as snow shovels, ice melt, and firewood, to tackle any snowstorms or emergencies that may arise during the season.

Plumbing Precautions:

Frozen pipes are a common issue during Vermont winters, often leading to costly water damage. To prevent this, insulate any exposed pipes and consider installing a programmable thermostat to keep the indoor temperature consistent. Know where your main water shutoff valve is located in case of emergencies. Additionally, disconnect and drain any outdoor hoses and faucets to prevent them from freezing and bursting.

Preparing your Vermont home for the winter season requires a proactive approach to maintenance and care. By taking the necessary steps to weatherproof your home, inspect your HVAC system, maintain your roof and gutters, protect outdoor elements, and safeguard your plumbing, you can ensure that your haven remains a warm and secure refuge during the coldest months. Remember, early preparation can save you from costly repairs and ensure your peace of mind throughout the snowy Vermont winter. Stay warm, stay safe, and embrace the beauty of the season in the comfort of your well-prepared home.
