Bolton is a town in eastern Chittenden County where the Green Mountains meet the Winooski River valley. The main crest of the Green Mountains runs north to south through the eastern part of the town, and the Winooski River cuts through the mountains along the southern portion, with U.S. Route 2 following the north bank. Interstate 89 also passes through Bolton, though without an interchange in the town itself. Bolton Valley ski area, situated in the northeastern part of the town at the highest base elevation of any Vermont ski resort, is accessible from Route 2. The Long Trail traverses Bolton on its path between Camel's Hump and Mount Mansfield.
Bolton is a predominantly rural town with settlement concentrated in the Winooski River valley and around the Bolton Valley ski area.
