It is conveniently crossed by I-89 and US Route 2 and contains a stop along the New England Central Railroad. It is located on the western side of the Green Mountains and to the east of the Lake Champlain valley.
 
Richmond was home to George F. Edmunds, a Republican U.S. Senator from 1866 to 1891, and was the birthplace of Louis Greenough, a pioneer in internal-combustion powered automobiles.
