Essex Junction Village was separated from Essex in 1892 to provide public services like sidewalks, water, and sewers to villagers who wanted them without the rest of the town citizens, mostly rural inhabitants, having to pay for them. Essex Junction is a hub of industry containing many IBM offices and plants, including their Burlington Design Center, wafer fabrication plant, Data Processing Division, and semiconductor plant.
